I beat Orcs & Elves II last night, so now I feel I can give a complete review. Basically, it doesn't stray too far from the setup provided by DoomRPG and Orcs & Elves and in fact makes a lot of nice additions that seem like a natural progression from the first games. For instance, the 3-D world you run around in now has an additional vertical level that's used mostly for decoration's sake, but makes for some nice scenery. There are now puzzles involving rocks and air jets that, while not too terribly "puzzle-y" makes for a nice addition to the combat. You get a white mouse "familiar" that you can control that can go through bars and small holes to add secret areas and in one part, solve a puzzle. There is a lockpicking minigame which isn't terribly difficult, but again, it breaks up the combat sequences nicely. It's isn't all sunshine and daisies, however. The game is a straight linear affair, breaking away from the hub-style gameplay of the first two titles. The plot really weak for the most part, but to be honest I wasn't really expecting anything better. If anything, Orcs & Elves II shows that Fountainhead is moving forward with their engine and trying new things out. Overall, I have to say that I hope that John Carmack keeps shoveling these things out. I predict that as long as the quality continues the way it's been going by Orcs & Elves V we'll have the perfect game. Cellphone or not. |

So, there was some party this weekend. Originally, I had heard that someone had invited a bunch of people over to the place where I live. This was insane. Where I live hardly supports the lives of the three people who live there, and when the number of total people in the house reaches over five, things are crowded. The bachelor party proved that. So, being as that one member of the household was in Las Vegas, I had a chat with my other roommate. He agreed that we couldn't handle the number of people coming over. So who invited these people over to party? Well, it turned out that whatever happened worked itself out. The party instead was held at a much larger place where, according to what I've heard, three of four roommates had agreed to host the party. We had one guest stay the night and I had a stress-free weekend. Sorry about not coming to the party, but it sounds like you guys had a fun enough time without me. I got to veg out and relax. In any case, brit_brat100. Please don't invite people to someone else's house. Now, if you didn't, that's cool, but that's what the word is and I'd rather the air is clear rather than have drama. Comments are left open, so go hog wild.

| I would encourage people to check out Droop today. Actually, you should check out the entire strip, because KC Green is hilarious, but today is important because of the dedication after the comic. | ||||

So, for the first time since I started this journal, I've changed my default userpic. That's right, no more oekaki p_fish, but Potsticker. Now, the p_fish name and subsequent avatar (of which the current design is actually the third redesign) is as old as me being on the internet. It was my very first username on anything and I've gotten quite a few miles out of it. Today, May 1st, 2007, I am finally retiring the next to last vestige of p_fish. There's still my main yahoo account, which contains the p_fish moniker, but since I can't really go around changing it, and my mail is redirected there from both Adamsk and Potsticker at my website (Coyote Mischief) it really doesn't matter. Oh, well, and there's my livejournal name, too, I guess. So, the third last vestige, then. A little explanation for the two names I'm using on the internets right now. Adamsk is for all intents and purposes, my real name. It's the nickname Jason branded me with that's been pretty helpful as a name that contains my real name, but seems to be unique enough that I can use it as a username pretty much anywhere I need to. Potsticker, originally, was a name to post and do stuff under that was unconnected with me. A way to be as anonymous as a webposter can be. However, I realized that I cared less and less about this and Potsticker got assimilated into just a username to use if for some reason I couldn't use Adamsk. And when I did series of mspaint drawings, I usually drew myself as a stick figure with a potsticker on my shirt. (It's not a taco. Here's me eating my taco shirt, as someone once suggested I do: ) So, that's about it. p_fish is old, Potsticker is new (within the last couple of years) and Adamsk remains. And I continue to use Livejournal for weird things rather than as a journal. And if I say I'm going to post more of something, I almost never do. |

Spurred on by this article I figured that actually coding a game right now would be a good idea, for a variety of reasons. Mainly that I'd be putting something out there that shows that I know this stuff, and because I need something to reassure myself that I do, indeed, know this stuff. Some differences from Mr. Barson's endeavor and my own include the fact that I'm using a language that I know a bit about (J2ME, of course) and that I'll be using a half-finished (Shouldn't-even-be-called) design document that I wrote up a while ago. Also, since it seemed good enough for some of our outside developers that things only work on the emulator, I'm not going to bother with making sure it works on an actual phone in those 40 hours. I've got the Java SDK and the J2ME wireless toolkit installed and made sure it all worked by coding up a quick "Hello World" program making sure the build process and everything worked in the emulator. I don't know if I'll actually spend 8 hours a day (unlikely) doing this, so the "one week game" may take more than a real world week, but we'll see how that goes. I'll post updates here on LJ on at least the amount of time I've taken up. Wish me luck! |

Well, Friday was a blast. LARP went amazingly well. Much thanks to Ted, Ralph, Gary, Erik, Tony, Nate and everyone else for helping to make such a memerable and fun night. Three weeks in and already it's this great? That's why I have such a hard time LARPing with any other group. Also, a big FU to kitkat_nap for showing me the first episode of Ouran Host Club. It's like Fruits Basket, but better, and there's something I find so moe about Haruhi that I can't put my finger on it's rediculous. Also, YouTube continues to be the superior way to watch anime these days, it seems.
